The administrative landscape of international travel in Cameroon takes a significant turn with the recent decree issued by the President Paul Biya. After nearly 26 years old This fundamental text sets out the terms and conditions for the application of the electronic visaan initiative launched in 1997 to facilitate the entry of international visitors and modernise the immigration system. By introducing a simplified e-enrolment process, Cameroon is affirming its commitment to making its administration more dynamic while improving the experience of travellers.

2 March 2023 marks a historic date for the Cameroon with the signing of a decree by the President Paul Biyathe introduction of the electronic visa. After nearly 26 years of reflection and waiting, the country is finally on the road to simplifying administrative procedures for its visitors. Thanks to this breakthrough, the visa process will be considerably streamlined, an essential step in boosting the tourism sector and enhancing the country's appeal.

Law 97/012, adopted in January 1997, had already laid the foundations for the introduction of the electronic visaBut it took almost three decades for an implementing decree to be put in place. This change is part of an overall administrative drive to adapt the country to modern standards while improving the experience of international visitors. The announcement of this reform comes at a time when the need for a more agile and efficient system is more topical than ever.

As part of this reform, several types of visas have been defined, each with specific durations. The transit visa is planned for a stay of 5 dayswhile the short-stay visa will allow you to stay until 6 months. For longer stays, the long-stay visa will be valid for 12 months. It should be noted that no visitor visa will be convertible into a work visa, underlining the importance of a clear framework for the different categories of visa.

The electronic visa will now be made easier thanks to the introduction of ae-enrolment. This paperless service allows applicants to submit their application via a dedicated website, regardless of their location. Applicants will need to provide their personal details, attach the required supporting documents and make the corresponding payment. An innovative element is the secure aspect of this process, which ensures better management of applications.

One of the promises of this new system is that applications will be processed quickly. The Cameroonian authorities have undertaken to process applications in 3 dayswith the option of accelerated treatment in 1 day for express visa applications. On arrival, the visa will be pasted into the traveller's passport on presentation of a valid online pre-registration, ensuring that formalities are greatly simplified compared with previous methods that required physical visits to the consulate.

With almost 745,000 international visitors welcomed in 2019, Cameroon is aiming to reverse the trend and attract more tourists thanks to this reform. The new electronic visa system should not only ease the administrative burden on visitors, but also enhance the country's international image. With a more welcoming approach, Cameroon hopes to boost its economic sectors linked to tourism and hospitality.

This decree also goes beyond the simple electronic visa. President Paul Biya has extended the framework of administrative procedures to include the issuing of residence permits, repatriation, exit visas and family reunification. As a result, foreign workers and residents will also find the administrative process simplified and secure, a major asset for strengthening intercultural and economic ties.

A decisive step towards modernisation
